Highlights

Last week Friday we were off to Liverpool again for the Rock’n’Roll Marathon weekend. We had an amazing time as per usual. I’m going to TRY to do more of a race report/ highlights of the weekend in the coming week. But I can tell you a few things already:

My 5K Race was a success! My physio said I could run it in 4/1 intervals and that’s exactly what I did. We ran in “fancy dress” (what the British call dressed up or in costume) and because I only knew at the last minute that I’d be able to run, I just used some Halloween stuff I had and did my make-up as a Sugar Skull. i should have known that my face was going to melt into my eyes though, being that it was water based! haha! It was loads of fun, once again, and we have plenty of fun costumes.

of course no Rock’n’Roll race is complete without Amy Winehouse!

I got to cheer on Liz during the marathon and meet her properly the next day at coffee. My friend Charlotte and her friend Nikki also joined us as well as Liz’s partner Matthew. Super nice time with them!

Matthew was kind enough to take the photo – that’s Liz in the middle and my friend Charlotte to her left. Ron and Nikki are standing.

This week Thursday was a holiday here in the Netherlands (in Europe and Scandinavia too, actually) and I spontaneously went for a 40KM bike ride to get myself out of the house. It wasn’t the best weather, but it was dry, so I went. The way back was a bit of resistance training with the wind though! I am going to head back the same direction probably in a few weeks, to visit a few other places (I wanted to go to Bronkhorst, but had no change for the ferry to cross the Ijssel).

I couldn’t resist sending another talking cow photo to Ron while I was out. This lady was just staring at me and not moving a bit!

Even with a trip to Liverpool in between the last 14 days, the rest of the days were fairly normal; working and staying active. At Pilates last week they did ask me if I wanted to go to the Monday class instead of the Wednesday, which really changes my whole perspective on the class in general. Apparently it’s a much more advanced class, but small enough that my instructor would keep an eye on me and help me out where needed. Nice to know they understand that I need to “feel” like I’m actually doing something. I thought maybe I would just stop after the last class on July 10th (summer break) but now I don’t know. It is actually really expensive so I still need to think about it. Unfortunately next Monday is another holiday as well (I know, another luxury problem) which means I will have to go to Wednesday class yet again.

I did go to the new gym last week (and Saturday) with my friend M-J and we did Bodypump together. I’m super impressed with the changes they’ve made since I left years ago (I think it’s been 5 years) and, as far as the class and the instructor go, top scores for them! Of course they did not remember me at all but as I predicted, as soon as Ron walked in on Saturday and they were all “HEY, RON, YOU’RE BACK, GREAT TO SEE YOU!” Ugh. Ladies Love Cool Ron.

Coming up Next Week

  • Monday – Pilates
  • Tuesday – AM strength and balance, walk @ lunch, RPM
  • Wednesday – PT and Bodypump
  • Thursday – AM Walk 30 min, 20 min strength and balance (goodbye party for a colleague after work)
  • Friday – Running
  • Saturday – Gym (not sure yet what I’ll do there)
  • Sunday – RPM

I have some plans for June and I’ll be sharing those as well in the upcoming week.

That’s a wrap!

How’ve you been? Have you ever dressed up for a race? Do you ever see animals and imagine they are saying something to you? How’s your training going? Have you run a race in the last couple of weeks?

Comments

  1. Liz Dexter says:

It was amazing to see you on the course on the day and then meet you all properly afterwards! What a bonus, especially as I wasn’t sure we’d work out the arrangements with it being such a complicated weekend. So glad your foot is allowing you to run, too!

    1. Renée says:

Thanks, Liz! And really was a highlight of our weekend in Liverpool to connect with you!

  2. Coco says:

Oh man, I’d forget about melting makeup too. I hope it wasn’t too bad. I enjoyed hearing about your bike ride. Sounds amazing to me. Thanks for warning me of upcoming client holidays — that means they will want things done early. :-P

    1. Renée says:

I totally didn’t even think about the makeup melting! Duh! And it wasn’t that bad really, just a few minutes of my eyes on fire haha! I take it by now you’ve hit your deadlines since we are now all about to enjoy a 3 day weekend!

  3. Look at you running! WTG! It’s so awesome that you got to meet Liz, too.

    1. Renée says:

thanks! and yes super nice to meet Liz! she’s just as lovely in person!

  4. Laurie says:

Wow! Love your make up and costume. That seems like it would be a fun race and I am glad you got to participate. 4/1 intervals are pretty appealing. I like the walk breaks. It looks like your bike ride was in a beautiful area.

    1. Renée says:

thanks! and yes 4/1’s are actually quite nice and doable especially if you don’t want to or can’t go full force. I hope to get out for another bike ride in the area soon too!

  5. kookyrunner says:

So cool that you were able to meet Liz while in Liverpool. She seems like such a sweet woman!

I love that it always seems like you and Ron are in a new city. I love that you both travel so much – I get to live vicariously through you!

    1. Renée says:

She is so lovely! And we definitely appreciate the fact that we are able to travel. One day it may not be like this anymore so we definitely don’t take that for granted.

  6. deborahbrooks14 says:

So much fun that you and Liz got to meet up! Love it when that happens. Yes I love to dress up for races it’s fun. Thanks for linking up

    1. Renée says:

Yes I love when I get to meet others that I’ve met through running and/or blogging! i wish we would dress up more here in NL but I think it’s a bit too serious here (except for color runs).

  7. Kim at Running on the Fly says:

Does melting makeup feel anything like perspiration in one’s eyes? UGH. I had to sit down and pour water from my water bottle over my face because my eyes were burning so bad after my race yesterday. Of course, my clothes were saturated, with perspiration, so that wasn’t an option LOL Thanks so much for linking with us!!

    1. Renée says:

yes it does! like sweat XL! luckily it was out within a few minutes after the race! And yeah I didn’t want to wipe my eyes because… more of the makeup everywhere (where it wasn’t supposed to be!)!

  8. therightfits says:

How great that you met another blogger in real life!

Pliates is pricey, but I feel like it’s such a valuable workout…but man, if only it was just a bit cheaper!

    1. Renée says:

yes I do love it when that happens! And YES! is it just expensive everywhere??? I thought it was maybe my studio!

  9. Cari says:

Love the Sugar Skull, and yay on a successful 5K
The British fancy dress thing is just so fun to follow on social
So glad you & Liz were able to meet up
    Love the talking cow!

    1. Renée says:

thank you!! they do know how to party on the race course for sure! Very happy to meet Liz, hopefully I’ll see her again in the future!

  10. Chaitali says:

Yay for a fun race! I love the make-up :) I always feel like I need more hours in the day too… or one less day at work would help too!

    1. Renée says:

thank you! and girl I tried the one less work day and I still don’t have time!

  11. Congrats on your 5K. Love your costume! Yikes on the makeup as I can imagine that must have hurt your eyes.

    1. Renée says:

thank you! and yes it was momentarily annoying and painful!

  12. YAY for 5K success and your make-up looked amazing…even if it melted – LOL!! And I’m dying over the LL Cool RON meme. That is too funny. I also took some pictures of cows this week at the University of Connecticut, and sent them to my husband. Hope you get back out on your lovely ride this week :-)

    1. Renée says:

Thank you! and I was giggling at my own meme but thought no one else would get it. But do you send pictures that have them talking??? that’s the next step :)

  13. Wendy says:

Congrats on that 5k! Wasn’t it great to be able to run again? I have to laugh about the costumes and all–when I ran Big Sur, there was a guy dressed up like Hulk Hogan. We talked to him and he was a Brit, surprised that no one else was dressed up for the race. I had no idea it was a thing in the UK! Your costume was amazing. One of the reasons I don’t wear makeup when I run is because I sweat like no other and it all runs in my eyes.

    1. Renée says:

thank you! yes I LOVED being out in a race again! I do wear a bit of makeup I guess, but more just like mascara (waterproof) – but usually it’s only a good SPF that I’ve got smeared on my face!

  14. Marcia says:

Hooray for a successful “comeback” 5k! I love your “fancy dress” and fun makeup! The London Marathon was packed with people in crazy costumes. No surprise there! I am a person nobody remembers ever. Part of me feels like I need to make an effort to be less “mousy” but most of me enjoys flying under the radar. So hilarious about Cool Ron. Haha!

    1. Renée says:

Thanks Marcia! and OMG LONDON has the craziest amount of fancy dress I’ve ever seen (obvs only in photos!) I totally remember you from meeting you if that means anything :) I don’t think I’ll dress up for any other races to be honest! Ladies do love Cool Ron (and sometimes the boys do too).

  15. How exciting that you were able to run in the 5K, and in costume at that!

If it makes you feel any better, I’ll tell you a funny story about someone not remember me, and he came to our wedding. It wasn’t just that he didn’t recognize me last weekend at the wedding we attended, but he didn’t remember me, even when I said I’m Bill’s wife. We hung out some in college, he came to our wedding, we saw him shortly after our wedding, and we’ve seen him twice in the last seven or so years… Boy, did I rib him about it the rest of the weekend!
