WRD: Week 23 -What’s the Time?

It’s time to get ill, apparently.

Deborah and Kim are the amazing hosts for the Weekly Run Down! Feel free to join in as well to wrap up your week in fitness!

Tuesday – 3KM walk (office day) to and from train station
Wednesday – 3KM walk, W6R1 run, 6KM, GLI 1 hour, gym 55 min

Sunday 2KM walk, long run W6R3, 1.4KM w/u walk, 10KM run (!!!)

So, yeah, this week was kind of a wash. I want to say I started off strong, but to be honest (firstly, with myself) I was already sick last week Friday and just fighting it. I’ve been sick more than a week, the worst of it really being Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

This Week In Fitness

My Plan vs. Actual:

  • Monday – AM Strength and balance (switched from Tuesday), walk @ lunch, Pilates
  • Tuesday – AM strength and balance, walk @ lunch, RPM
  • Wednesday – short lunch walk, PT and Bodypump 3KM crappy run for Global Running Day
  • Thursday – AM Walk 30 min, 20 min strength and balance (goodbye party for a colleague after work)
  • Friday – Running 14KM biking (commute style, not workout style)
  • Saturday – Gym (not sure yet what I’ll do there) does feeling sorry for yourself count as exercise?
  • Sunday – RPM 18.6KM bike support for Ron

Monday I started the week with my good intentions and 3 alarms to get me out of bed on time to do my AM workout… AND I even fully prepped my food and was fully on the path I wanted to be on for the rest of the week. I changed the AM workout to Monday because of Pilates until 10PM (and it being harder then to get out of the bed on Tuesday morning). I also got a walk in at lunch, despite it being a super busy day at work.

Monday’s lunch walk through park Sacre Coeur

Tuesday another busy day at work, but still got out for a walk at lunch. I picked up Vincent after work and a light dinner and we did our first RPM class at the “new” gym. I was already feeling slightly worse for wear, but I didn’t want to already cancel on Vincent. I could definitely tell that I was not 100% because it felt like my HR was through the roof during the class.

Tuesday in Klarendal – decided to walk up to the windmill and back. One of my favorite spots in Arnhem.

Wednesday another challenging day at work and by now I have lost my voice almost completely. My manager even noticed my stress levels and told me to go out and get some fresh air and take a break (I tend to work through lunch if I have too much going on), so I did do a short lunch walk. I had PT at 4pm (one of the reasons for my stress since I had to leave a bit early). Once I got there I asked my physio if I could skip the treadmill warming up and do something else, since my lungs were starting to feel a bit on fire, so he had me on the elliptical 10 minutes. The rest of the workout was a real sweatfest, which I actually enjoyed (sometimes it feels like I’m doing nothing there). I biked home and then decided to go out and attempt a run outside for Global Running Day. It was a hot mess to be perfectly honest! Which is fine. This is why I did NOT want to run on the treadmill. I just wanted to go out outside, run, stop if I needed to (which I did) and make it back home in one piece. Mission accomplished.

one of my many outtakes

Thursday was probably the morning I felt the worst when I woke up, but I pushed on because not only did i have a going away party for a colleague, I actually had arranged half of it and I didn’t want to let anyone down. In hindsight this is just silly because the only person I let down was myself. Instead of finally staying home and giving in to the sickness, I went to work, pushed through, went to part 1 of the festivities (the part I arranged) and then went to dinner (part 2) with just the girls in honor of my colleague who has decided to return to Russia. I got home at 10PM and felt like total dog butt on a cracker.

day 2 no voice and really starting to feel off, but apparently the show must go on…

Luckily I was off Friday, as per usual, but, again, instead of staying in bed and getting the sickness out of my system, I kept my bike maintenance appointment and cycled a total of 14KM (there and back twice) while I had my bike in the shop (one time home and one time there was with a loaner bike). You may proceed with eye rolling, because this is just ridiculous. I could have just called them and asked to change it to next week.

This led to me spending all of Saturday in a zombie-like state. It’s now Sunday and I have now showered, my dry hacking couch has finally settled down and my head no longer feels like it’s going to explode. Ron wanted to get outside and, to be honest, so did I, so I went with him on the bike for 18.6KM (with a short break around 14.5). Of course he couldn’t have chosen a more challenging route so it was me, my legs and my lungs against the hills. Thanks, Ron.

is one ever too sick to NOT eat cake? no? I didn’t think so.

Lesson learned this week: stop being so damned stubborn when sick. I hardly ever get sick so I don’t accept it too easily. Ron was sick as well and, while we joke about men having man-flu while we just have a common cold, guess who the joke is on now? He stayed home and I didn’t, if that gives you any clue…

Roger Hargreaves was obviously inspired by me

This Week In Numbers

Biking 56.25 KM (bit over 35 miles)
Running 1x 3KM
Gym RPM 1x
AM Workout 1x
Steps *53655 (as of publishing) or around 7.6K steps average per day

A couple of side notes: Pilates- I went to the advanced class again and really liked it. I was even sweating! Whether that was me being sick or really working hard (I was) , I’ll take it as a good thing.

My foot – in yet another turn of events I’m on a pain scale this week of 1, where I’m usually around a 6 or 7. The fluid in my foot seems to be less and I hardly even notice anything going on in my foot, even when barefoot. I am still taking anti-inflammatories and before I get out of the shower I do hot/cold water alternating a few times (as suggested by the clinic). I can at least tell you I’m ecstatic about this!

Also? The weather has been officially insane and needs to be institutionalised. It’s been hot, much cooler, then we had a tornado rip through Rheden (which is not far from us, about 10KM – we often run through here for longer runs), it got warmer again and then rained like hell, and then we had a few days of massive wind. Tuesday, the night of the tornado, Ron and I were watching the storm and I said to him “it’s a twister” – he just thought I was exaggerating and/or being funny, but the last time I saw the trees moving the way they were, was when a tornado was passing very close to my hometown in New Mexico (we’re talking more than 30 years ago, but I remember it vividly). Later we found out that indeed a tornado had passed through our province and a bit over the border into Germany. I don’t think I’ve ever heard of this happening in the Netherlands since I’ve lived here!

we also saw a lot of trees down today on our run/ride (this photo from weer.nl taken on wednesday morning)

Coming up Next Week

June Reset, Take II

  • Monday – National Holiday; if feeling well enough, bike ride + strength @home beforehand
  • Tuesday – AM run/walk (3 – 4 KM), RPM
  • Wednesday – AM workout (20 – 30 min), PT, Pilates
  • Thursday – Bodypump or XCO @ gym
  • Friday – AM workout (20 -30 min), run after work (4 – 5KM)
  • Saturday – gym (not sure yet if class or just cardio/strength)
  • Sunday – RPM, run

All of this totally dependant on how I feel.

That’s a wrap!

How was your week? Are you as stubborn as I am when it comes to being ill? Did you run on Global Running Day?

Comments

  1. I hope you’re feeling better soon. Clearly you need my Friday’s blog . . . but I know that it’s hard when you have so much going on. I was lucky that I didn’t have a lot going on, but I’m pretty good at resting once I’m truly sick — because I know otherwise I’ll be sick forever.

That’s great news about your foot! It sounds like the surgery was a success.

The weather truly is nuts. This week was a bit bipolar, again, but it’s seriously the nicest weather we’ve had in a long time.

  2. Wendy says:

So sorry to hear that you are not feeling well. I have been seeing a ton of sick kids in my clinic–this time of year, it’s pretty much unexpected. I think the cool weather is to blame–keeping us all inside and sharing germs. Where is summer?

Glad to hear your foot isn’t hurting much any more. Fingers crossed it stays that way! Feel Better!

  3. therightfits says:

Great news about the foot- glad the surgery was a success! Feel better soon! :)

  4. Oh no sorry you had such a rough week! At least the foot is feeling better though. Sending good vibes your way and hope you are on the mend!

  5. Well, it sounds like you reached a catharsis–>rest up when it’s warranted ;-) (I know, it’s much easier to say than to do). Glad the foot is feeling better!!!!! The filtered pick of you (and the windmill) is awesome…looks like a portrait that should be framed/mounted. Thanks for linking with us ;-)

  6. Hannah says:

Glad your foot is feeling better! Hope you can rest up and get rid of the sickness in the next couple days.

  7. kookyrunner says:

So sorry that you aren’t feeling well :( The spring/summer cold is SO annoying because it’s like you survived winter just to get hit with this nonsense, lol. On a more positive note, glad your foot is feeling better!

  8. Liz Dexter says:

Oh dear! I just basically rest like mad the first day I feel ill and that normally lets it pass through, but it can be hard to accept and obviously I don’t have a job outside the home which helps (though also no one to cover my work).

We had a tornado here in Birmingham not long after we moved here, again a very rare thing. Fortunately we were OK but houses and shops nearby were wrecked!

  9. Coco says:

Boo on being sick but YAY on your foot not hurting much! I hate to surrender to illness too. I usually push through work, etc., but then collapse on the sofa when I get home. I love that mural by your coffee shop/cake break.

  10. Rabbit Food Runner says:

I’m glad your manager told you to go outside for a walk when stressed. I’m currently reading the Nature Fix which is about how getting out in nature makes us healthier, happier, more creative. There’s a huge section in there about how getting outdoors makes us less stressed. Great news on the foot!

  11. Chaitali says:

Ugh, sorry you were feeling so badly last week :( That’s great that you were beginning to feel better by Sunday and that the pain in your foot is almost gone!

  12. Sorry you haven’t been feeling well. The cake didn’t make it better? :) Nine years ago we had a tornado touch down near our town. I actually knew one of the families whose house had been hit. Sadly, only one of the four family members survived the tornado. It’s so weird (and tragic), you never expect something like that to happen near you!

  13. I hope you are feeling better. That cake! Yummy! Sick or not sick I would still eat it.

I did laugh when I read this “total dog butt on a cracker.” :-) I’ve never heard of that.

  14. Marcia says:

Sorry you felt so cruddy this week. No fun at all. I’m glad you treated yourself to that big fat piece of cake. I’d do the same! I was gonna ask if tornadoes were common in your area and then you answered my question. Wow! Glad everybody is ok!

  15. Ugh so sorry you haven’t been feeling well. I’m stubborn too when I get sick – hard to give into it. It is good to hear that your foot’s doing well. Hope this week is better for you!
