Weekly Run Down Blogger Linkup

I have to apologise to my blogger friends – I really had some challenges with time last week and I did not get to all the blogs in the linkup. I try to go to every single blog and I think I have missed 4 or 5. So I’m sorry if I missed your blog (and so far haven’t responded yet to comments but hoping to do that in a bit!)

To sum it up

I had a busy week – work was busy and stressful and I was also busy going to the pool, the gym, pilates, etc. It’s also really, officially fall weather – cool, crisp, sometimes sunny and sometimes rainy. This morning we even had frost on the car windows…

fall days in NL

I had a full day out Friday (my day off) – I went back to the orthopedic surgeon because I still have pain and a “weird” feeling in my 4th toe. Come to find out I have synovitis (lots of fluid) and arthritis in my toe joints. I do not know how they could not have seen this earlier! I think the focus has been on fixing the not-fully-completed surgery from 3 years ago. They didn’t really look further than under the foot. Apparently the erosion on the joint seems to be going on for about 3 or 4 years. At least, that’s from what they could tell.. which is about how long I’ve been complaining about it… (excuse me while I go over here in a corner and scream my lungs out…) I ended up gettin a steroid shot in the joint and while it’s still a bit stiff, it certainly already feels better than it did on Friday morning.

It was also quite a social day on Friday. After my appointment I met up with Joanna again and had a great catch-up with her.

Then in the evening my friend Gerrit was transformed into Miss Charlie Sparkle, performing in her very first drag show ever! It was super late by the time I got home (2:30am) but I was so glad to be there as part of her entourage!

She sure did sparkle!

This Week In Fitness

this week in fitness - weekly run down

This week in Fitness – Planned vs. Actual

  • Monday – Aqua Jogging (maybe something else as well because it only starts at 9pm) actual
  • Tuesday – RPM actual
  • Wednesday – Pilates actual
  • Thursday – Gym, strength or maybe XCO or maybe both
  • Friday – strength at home
  • Saturday – walk or bike
  • Sunday – RPM + a bit of strength

Done with Swim Classes

So I didn’t hate aqua jogging – the concept of -but I really did not enjoy the class. These classes are just not for me. Maybe it sounds like I’m being elitist or something but I feel that the classes are really below my level. I mean I’m not at some sort of high level of fitness but I’m not “new” at all of this. I have the feeling participants in these classes are just starting their fitness journey. So, I’ll go and do laps but no more classes.

Gym Time

I’m enjoying my gym time with 2x RPM this week and 1 time strength training with a bit of a bonus today after RPM; I haven’t been doing side planks so I decided today to do some planking and my exercises from the physio, along with some stretching.

Fonzie jumping
he was jumping so high and so fast he’s just a blur …

Pilates is Pilates

This is what I always say to Ron when he asks me “How was it?”. I know it’s good for me, but I’m looking for a bit more advanced course in a couple of weeks.

All in all I’d give this week a B; I did have two rest days but had more than 10K per day steps (on average – still not every day 10K). I logged into MFP and logged my food 4 out of 7 days. I feel like I’m getting my groove back a bit, but not gonna lie, I’m still missing being able to run.

Coming up Next Week

On the Plan for Next Week

Next week will be a bit challenging with time and workouts. I have a team outing and dinner with work on Tuesday.

  • Monday – gym, strength training
  • Tuesday – I shall make more than a feeble attempt to get up early to do a walk in the morning
  • Wednesday – Pilates
  • Thursday – Gym, strength training
  • Friday – something at home
  • Saturday – Parkrun in Dusseldorf
  • Sunday – RPM

Parkrun in Dusseldorf

So, Parkrun is coming to the Netherlands and soon there will be a Parkrun in Nijmegen (a neighboring city that I often run to/in). I’m working with a couple of other people to actually get it going here in Arnhem as well! I am in contact with the guys in Nijmegen and several of the core team are going to Parkrun Dusseldorf Saturday morning. Naturally I want to go as well! But I can’t run… at least at Parkrun you can walk the whole 5KM since they encourage everyone of all levels to join. Another guy interested in helping us in Arnhem is coming as well We’ll be a pretty decent group of Dutchies as Parkrun tourists. I’m looking forward. It will be hard not to run at all. If you made bets against me you would probably win…

That’s a wrap!

That’s pretty much it for this week

How was your week? What grade would you give yourself? Have you got anything exciting planned for next week? Have you ever run Parkrun? What do you think, will I resist the urge to gently jog Parkrun in Dusseldorf?

Comments

  1. Wendy says:

It’s so hard being a patient, isn’t it? I’ve had some struggles this week trying to get my Humira–and I missed my dose because something is up with the pharmacy. It’s frustrating, especially since I’ve gotten my disease back under control. Hang in there and I hope you get some relief from the foot issues.

Parkrun sounds like so much fun! I wish it would come here!

    1. Renée says:

it really is Wendy! but at least I finally got my complaints validated! I really hope we get Parkrun here it would be brilliant!

  2. Birchwood Pie says:

Argh there is nothing worse when for whatever reason, the doctor doesn’t listen. I don’t have a solution, I’m just joining you in the corner to scream with you.

    1. Renée says:

thanks for screaming with me. sometimes that’s all you need to have someone just say “yeah that really sucks!” instead of having an answer!

  3. How frustrating about your toe! But also good that you finally got some answers and hopefully some pain relief for it. That looks like it was quite performance you attended. I get the Pilates is just Pilates thing. Feeling you over here

    1. Renée says:

frustrating yes, but good to finally be validated. let’s see how long the shot lasts!

  4. Oh, I am so sorry that they hadn’t really looked further than the current stuff going on with your feet. :( But glad that it’s getting attended to now.

Everyone has different likes & dislikes when it comes to fitness — just move forward with the stuff you enjoy, that’s the important part!

    1. Renée says:

the biggest challenge with the movement is finding the joy. I really want to get stronger/ fitter but maybe this is it? I don’t know.

      1. I don’t think this is it for you. Like most things in life, this too shall pass. Maybe you won’t get back to where you were, and that sucks, but I do think you’ll find joy in movement again. Everything you’re going through will actually make you stronger; I know it doesn’t feel like that right now but it’s true!

I don’t know how I’d feel if I couldn’t run. I’ve been relatively lucky so far, knock on wood. I know I haven’t been able to run as much as I’d like to the last few months. Luckily I wasn’t training for anything, and so I just did what I could when I could & have to be satisfied with that. Even that is a little frustrating, of course. But again, it’s passed. Until the next thing happens. There’s always a next thing. :(

What besides movement gives you joy? Maybe it’s time to concentrate on other things for a while!

  5. Coco says:

It sounds like you got some fun in this week. Ugh on the “unnoticed” toe issues. Hope that cortisone works its magic. :-) I like your plan for Tuesday!

    1. Renée says:

it was a fun week. But yes UGH on the unnoticed toe issues.

  6. Kim at Running on the Fly says:

Wow, that thing with your toe was never diagnosed, along with all the other issues in the surrounding region were getting attention? I certainly can understand your frustration! But, you’re getting some answers (albeit a few years after the fact). And, you’re being patient with the running. Trust me, I know how tough that can be as well (try going through two weeks of “recovery” when you already feel recovered LOL). Hang in there, Girlfriend >3

    1. Renée says:

yes, kind of odd it was never “seen” but I guess I get it. Thanks Kim!

  7. Laurie says:

I felt the same way about the aqua classes I tried when I was injured. I did some aqua jogging on my own and it wasn’t terrible but it wasn’t as good as getting out there for a run. I hope you can hit the roads soon!

    1. Renée says:

Thanks Laurie! I do still want to get to the pool occasionally, just not going to force myself to do something I don’t like.

  8. Liz Dexter says:

So frustrating about your toe! I’m so sorry and glad you got that shot.

Did it go freezing cold this last weekend for you? It was shocking here!

I am allowing myself to have 10k on average every day if I get my 70k by the end of Sunday. Sometimes I just don’t have time. I’m disappointed I’ve gained weight when I weighed today, after really cutting the snacking in the week; however, I also know that it takes about 2 weeks for changes in eating to show up in my weight, so fingers crossed it turns back down again.

    1. Renée says:

very frustrating yes! It was quite cold, but I don’t think as bad as it was for you guys! Hope it’s going better for you with the changes.

  9. Ugh how annoying about your toe! Hopefully you get some relief now that they know whats going on. It sounds like you are doing great getting in your workouts. I bet it will be really hard not to run if you are at Parkrun!

    1. Renée says:

yes it’s really annoying! I do wonder if it wouldn’t be this bad had they found the issue before? but then again usually there is not much you can do in this case. It will be hard not to run at Parkrun. I am arguing a lot with the devil on my shoulder that says ‘Eff this, we’re RUNNING”.

  10. Sounds like you’re ready for some easy days and less stress! I hope everything works out with your toe/foot pain. And I absolutely LOVE the drag show and your friend’s transformation – how FUN!!! And I hear you on pool classes – running or otherwise – you don’t sound elitist, you sound normal :-)

    1. Renée says:

I am more than ready! but I feel like I am causing a lot of the stress myself. Gerrit/Charlie is so happy and the performance went so well, she’s been invited to perform again on a more regular basis! Which gives me an excuse to go out at least once a month on a Friday night ;-)

  11. How frustrating that they didn’t listen to your concerns! Hopefully it clears up for you. I know it sucks not being able to run when you desperately want to.

    1. Renée says:

well I think this is “it” for my foot. it won’t get better but they can at least help me with the steroid shot occasionally. Basically I’ll never run pain-free again. Which is fine. I don’t even know what that feels like!

  12. Chaitali says:

Ugh, sorry about the news about your toe :( That’s good news that the shot helped it feel better. I hope that continues! The parkrun sounds like it will be fun :)

    1. Renée says:

      thanks Chaitali!

  13. I’ve never done any swim/exercise classes, but just the thought of having to drive somewhere and get in a pool doesn’t excite me. There was a pool at my former gym, but I never used it. I just can’t get into it. Very cool that you are getting the Parkrun going! (and hope you can run it too soon!)

    1. Renée says:

I have to say I love swimming, but the pool I have been going to is pretty far away (well, not really haha but far enough) and the one nearer to me is pretty much my limit for driving/biking distance. I guess it’s good then that I don’t want to do the classes haha!

  14. Sorry to hear about your toe/foot pain. A shot? At least it feels better but no bueno that it wasn’t caught sooner.

    1. Renée says:

yes a corticosteroid shot – basically cortisone and a steroid to reduce the amount of fluid. pretty irritated that it wasn’t caught sooner for sure.

  15. Marcia says:

I’ve heard of Parkrun, in Australia even, but did not realize it was an “official” thing. I though it was just something people called a group run. Haha! I hope you can get it in Arnhem that would be so nice.
Sorry to hear about your ongoing foot issues and this is the first you’ve heard about the arthritis. I am frustrated FOR you and hope you can get some relief soon!
