Five Things I’m looking forward to this Fall

Y’all, toasty sweaters and hot chocoate with whip cream is right around the corner and I am ALL for it. Here’s five things I am looking forward to this fall:

Food: Oatmeal mornings

Maybe it sounds weird, but I cannot eat oatmeal in the summer. It’s just too much, too warm, too… I don’t know, heavy? But I just love it when it just starts to get a crisp in the air and I’m ready for a steamy bowl of deliciousness to start my day! And keeps me filled up! What’s your favorite way to eat oatmeal? Mine is with an egg whisked in for protein, a smashed banana and a spoon of peanut butter.

Food: Roasted potatoes and veggies

Again, this is not something I can easily eat in the spring or summer. I feel like I also eat MORE vegetables when it starts getting cooler because I literally will chuck anything in the oven to roast it haha! And is roasted veg even complete without little roasted potatoes? No, my friends, it is not. What’s your favorite roasted vegetable? I think mine is probably carrots or broccoli.

Fun: Forest Walks

While I love a nature walk any time of the year, there is something magical about the change of season from summer to fall. The trees turning amazing colors, the foliage on the ground and the mushroom spotting! As long as it’s not raining and I don’t need a heavy jacket, count me in! Do you love Fall Forest Walks as well? Mushroom foraging anyone? Hugging Trees?

Fun: Halloween (duh!)

OK so Halloween isn’t a huge thing here in the Netherlands, but we’ve been able to make something of it at parkrun which just tickles me to no end! There is no real candy-distributing (though we have a pretty multi-cultural neighborhood and sometimes it gets organized for the kids – then I definitely make sure to have some on hand), but it is now more popular for the adults to have Halloween themed parties (the Dutch still think your costume has to be something “scary”). I’ll stick to the parkrun dress-up for now and a bit of front yard decoration. I do miss a good Pumpkin Patch but I’ll take what I can get. Do you also love Spooky Season? Do you dress up “fun” or “scary”?

Function: My surgery

This year I’m particularly looking forward to my second foot surgery. Of course this was supposed to happen in August, but didn’t – whomp whomp. I’m scheduled for the 24th of October and have a 6 week recovery period. Next year I hope it will be a fall race I’m looking forward to thanks so the fixing of the feet! Do you have a fall race on the schedule? I’m hoping to be back at either the Seven Hills Night Run (7.5KM) or the Seven Hills Run (15KM) the next day. 2026 I’m coming for you.

Now Tell Me…What are you looking forward to this fall?

We didn’t have Halloween has such in Botswana (as a tradition) but there were always a few people who would organise Halloween parties. I’m looking forward to seeing if Halloween is a thing in Australia!

I’m the same with oats! It’s a fall/winter thing for me. Don’t enjoy it at all in the hotter months!

I eat oatmeal all summer. It’s my go to breakfast food.

I do love the colors of Fall.

Good luck with your surgery. I hope it goes smoothly.

Funny I’m the same way about oatmeal – just can’t do it during the summer months.

I’m excited for you to have your surgery – hoping it all goes smoothly and brings you relief!

I started working with a dietician in May, she told me I had to give up my cereal and eat oatmeal instead. And I tried… but after a few days it was a giant cup of Nope 😀

the thought of the final surgery gives me so much hope. 2026 will be my running return!

I don’t like hot milk so I have oats in cold milk as cereal all year round! My favourite roast vegetable is parsnip. No races!

oh I make my oats with water! and I do love a good roasted parsnip! Along with a Sunday roast please haha!

I am with you. As much as I love oatmeal, I tend to only eat it during the cooler time of the year. My favorite is an apple cinnamon oatmeal. Tastes like dessert 🙂
And give me all the roasted veggies!

Good luck with your surgery! I know you wanna put this behind you and hopefully be able to run much better again

I love Halloween so much! And soup! I love soup!

Our Halloween will be spent at a football game… it’s senior night, when the school honors the senior band members and athletes. So it’s not exactly spooky movies and trick or treating, but we are celebrating in our own way!

Soup season is already under way.
