WELOME to Fit Five Friday with with your FIVE amazing hosts – me, Darlene -My First 5K and MoreMichele – Running With Attitude, Jenn – Runs with Pugs, and Zenaida – The Running Teacher !

Before I start, just want to express my apologies for not getting to replies and blogs on my last post. I always strive to do this each time and with the traveling etc., I dropped the ball.

Let’s Begin!

As I’m currently on holiday, this week I wanted to talk a little bit about why I think it’s important to stay active even when you are on vacation.

Five Reasons to pack your kit for your holidays

I don’t think I have to convince my fitness friends, but just in case, these are the reasons I feel it’s necessary to pack your kicks and other kit when you take off for rest and relaxation.

Consistency – Just like at home, it’s good to keep your runs, walks, etc., consistent when you go away. Whether you are training for a race or you just want to keep up your daily activities, you can still do that away from home. Obviously taking precautions and scoping out good spots is also helpful.

Change of Scenery – Of course when you go away you are away from your regular routes. This can really provide a renewed motivation even for after your vacation is over. For me, for example, there is absolutely nothing better than running along the boulevard on the coast in the sun. And this creates an excitement in me that keeps going long after I have returned back to reality.

Opportunities you wouldn’t have at home – Biking, for example, somewhere you have never been or experiencing trails you otherwise wouldn’t hike or walk. In so many cities you can also do bike or walking tours. In some cases you can even try to connect with a local running club to see if you could join in on a social run or hey – you can check if there is a parkrun in the place you are visiting

Balance – Ok this may be controversial and I am the first person to say “you are not a dog, you do not have to earn your food” – but let’s face it; when we go on vacation we are probably eating things we don’t normally eat, snacking more, eating more ice cream (guilty) and possibly drinking (more) alcohol. My advise is to never go out purposely to “burn” your calories prior to imbibing and consuming, but do things to keep yourself in balance. That also includes getting enough sleep!

Bragging rights – Who doesn’t want a strava segment in Sicily, somewhere in the mountains in Switzerland or along the Costa del Sol? It’s fun to share your away-activities!

Do you take your kit with you when you go on vacation? What are your favorite vacation activities? Do you do bike or walking tours in places that are new for you? Have you ever achieved an “away” strava -segment?

Your vacation photos are amazing! Hope you’re having a fabulous time!

And, I agree with all of these – I always pack my fitness gear. Great way to explore a new location!

    Yes of course.

I love to get up early and see the sunrise – walking or running.

I love to run or race with different scenery than at home.

I love the no responsibilities – cooking, cleaning, laundry, pet care.

Have a fabulous time… keep sharing those pics so I can drool.

haha indeed Darlene, I love all of that! funnily enough there was a race today that neither one of us knew about and Ron was having major FOMO!

Lovely pics! I do like to take my running kit on holiday as I don’t get to run by the sea in the UK. I haven’t run in Cartagena yet as I’ve been on running slumps each time we’ve gone, but hoping to next month.

I always exercise on vacation and we usually do trips where we walk or hike a lot. I’m not excessive, but I enjoy running in new places and having active trips.
