WRD: A comeback to the Weekly Run Down -Week 1/2026

It’s January 2026 and I can’t even remember the last time I did a weekly run down. Since I’m a bit late with the link up, I’ll still go ahead and do the thing – after all a recap is also good for myself! Feel free to join the link up each week to share your fitness successes and challenges!

Monday 29/12

Work Day. My dear friend Tina (@crantina) went back to Calgary yesterday and unfortunately I had to work

Walking: 4KM – It was quite mild out and I wasn’t completely wiped from therapy so I took advantage of my energy and went out to the park.

Tuesday 30/12

Another work day. Nothing too exciting. Was able to use my lunch break for a quick run downtown to pick up a few needed items.

Walking: 2KM

Wednesday 31/12

Still had to work but signed off at 2pm. Had a friend coming over so did some tidying up and then somehow felt the need to completely deep clean my kitchen..

Walking: 4KM right when I finished work. Actually went to the park to check the parkrun course because it’s been freezing and snowing here…

Thursday 1/1

parkrun was a go! I was Run Director so no run or walk for me. 30 brave souls showed up just before 9am to run. Am always surprised how many people show up on New Year’s Day when the fireworks don’t stop here until like 3 or 4 AM.

Walking: 2.5KM Considering the fact that I did not want to and only set out to do 1KM, this felt like a big win.

smile only half-forced

Friday 2/1

I had to work. UGH. Used my lunch break again to go out to the park to check the course because of course Saturday is parkrunday …

Walking: 4KM. It was snowing and absolutely beautiful in the park. But yeah, no way we were going to have parkrun the next day.

Saturday 3/1

No parkrun but I had an appointment to go to a specialty store to get walking shoes. It was snowing and Ron didn’t want to drive and since all my snow driving has ever been in Chicago that makes me pretty much an expert for life haha!

Got the shoes and some longer socks and a cute headband that matches my coat (and my nails currently). Happy Camper.

Happy with my new walking shoes! and that store was amazing! actually way better than the stores in Arnhem and reminded me of the shops in the Lake District! Ready for Day 28 😀 #foryoupage #dailywalk #walkstreak #walkingshoes #walk

Walking: 4.3KM – was supposed to be 5KM but it was a just a fun little event in Zwolle (so driving again in the snow) – The Chocolate Walk. OMG it was amazing. It was dreamy-snowing and the city still had all the Holiday lights up. Quality bonbons all along the way as well. And Glühwein. It was heaven. I don’t know if we just went the wrong way or it is was “approximately” 5KM, but it does’t matter, we simply had a great time.

Zwolle was magical 💫 ❄️ 🌖 4.3km for the Chocolate Walk. The snow made it incredibly special and the moon was just absolutely stunning. #foryoupage #dailywalk #walkstreak #winter #netherlands

Sunday 4/1

Only thing on the plan today was a walk in Sonsbeek and Zypendaal with two ladies I know (one happens to be my neighbor) from Arnhem Together. Again totally dreamy in the park, and hot chocolate afterwards. I thought I would never want chocolate again after last night, but nope, completely over that ha!

Walking: 6KM

Total Walking: 26.8KM! Whoo Hoo!

How was your first week of the new year? Have you got some big plans for this year and are already setting things in motion?

Whoa, a chocolate walk? That totally sounds like something I’d enjoy! That’s a nice week of walking for you. Is it common to get so much snow in Netherlands? It sure looks pretty! I hate snow but it’s ok if I don’t have to go out in it and if I only see it in pictures, haha.

yeah a Chocolate Walk! That made it easy for my husband to join haha! Honestly I just stumbled across it when looking for events. so happy I did! It is not common at all to get this much snow. And unfortunately it may be here to stay for a while. I like a few days of snow, but then I’m done. Only time will tell.

Nice to have you back at the weekly run down ! It does look super cold there so Kudos to you for getting outside to do your walks. That is great that you are still organizing the parkruns. I remember you starting those years ago! Happy new years to you!

Thanks Deborah! At least yesterday it wasn’t treacherous walking in the snow. The city doesn’t clear the streets so if it freezes in the night then it’s just really slippery the next day. Indeed I’m still organizing parkrun, but a little bit less than before. I have a good team who can function without me now but sometimes I’m still needed. We have grown a lot and it’s just such a nice little community.

Nice to have you back! I had to laugh about you getting your winter driving skills in Chicago–that’s some street cred right there. The snow is so pretty! Are you not running anymore?

    1. Renee Avatar

haha it’s true though! I can pretty much maneuver anywhere in the snow thanks to driving my dad’s and my bestie’s tank of a car back in the day! I haven’t run since October when I had my 2nd foot op. I’m hoping to get the all clear from the physio this week to start C25K again. And waiting for this snow to let up…

Oh, I guess I’ve been missing all your TikToks — glad I can see them here. It’s banned in my house with my husb’s security clearance. 😉

Very cute snowmen and yay on the new walking shoes!

I just kind of started this new TikTok account. I know a lot of people can’t use the app. And to be honest you really aren’t missing much of my nonsense haha!

Someone already destroyed the cute little snowman around the corner from me (that I used as the main photo). We just can’t have nice things.

Well, it sure is beautiful there! Nice job keeping up the walking streak, and that chocolate walk sounds FUN! There’s no such thing as “never wanting chocolate again”, lol.

    1. Renee Avatar

Thanks Jenny! and yeah Saturday night I was like “hmmm I think I overdid it on the choc” and then Sunday totally forgot about that! LOL!

It’s nice to have you back blogging and joining the linkups, Renée! We’ve missed you!

You mentioned in another post that your feet were back to working and you’d just had surgery. If you don’t mind my asking, was the surgery on one or both feet? I’m a candidate for foot surgery and I’m struggling with making the decision on whether or not to have it.

    Happy New Year!

    1. Renee Avatar

      Thanks Debbie! <3
I did have both feet done but not at the same time. I had the right done in February and then left in October. I was able to run, walk, bike, gym, etc. from April until October. I’m so so glad I did it. It was well overdue. What surgery would you need? I had MTP / arthrodesis done. They removed all the bone spurs (which were horrendous and so painful) and I have two screws in each big toe to help fuse the bones.

      Happy new year to you!

Woot!!! Nice work with the walking streak! You have a much better attitude with the snow than I do, LOL! I agree but does look pretty, but only at a first glance, ha! Great to have you back with us!

    1. Renee Avatar

Thanks Kim! I think y’all get more snow than we do so it could be that it’s more of a novelty for us. Trust me, I’ll be sick of it in a few days if it keeps up!

  8. Melissa Avatar

Welcome back! It has been cold and snowy here, so I haven’t been getting outside much. I’ve instead been trying to walk and run on the treadmill – I am much angrier about winter/snow than you do 🙂 I need to start following you on TikTok! I don’t post but I do watch on there.

    1. Renee Avatar

Hey Melissa! thanks! I may have to turn to the treadmill soon if the snow keeps up. Then I might be angry LOL!

Lovely to see you back blogging, and I’m also enjoying our walk every day group. I’ve got to 10,000 steps every day for 9 days now and am happy with that, even though, with all the ice, a lot of them are in the gym. We got 88 at our New Year’s Day parkrun, 87 on Christmas Day, which we’d never put on before (and I didn’t attend, as I went to my original, and nearer, one instead). Happy New Year!

  10. Jenn Avatar

A chocolate walk! That sounds incredible!

I’m so glad you got to visit with Crantina and I am so glad you are back! I can’t wait to follow more of your adventures!

Happy New Year! I hope it’s a great one!
