WRD 26/2026 – Too Hot

There’s a massive heat wave in Europe at the moment and the Netherlands has not been excluded from the fun. I’m over it. I love summer but I hate humidity. It makes everything more difficult.

The plan this week was:

  • Monday – gym, walking
  • Tuesday – walking
  • Wednesday – walking
  • Thursday – walking
  • Friday – gym, walking
  • Saturday – parkrunday! + walking
  • Sunday – walking

Gym

Happy to report that we made it twice to the gym this week, as planned. Ron didn’t want to go Friday because of the heat and I reminded him we trained for a marathon not once, but twice with runs in Crete in August. If w,e can do a long run in 40* C even though it was 6am, we could go to the gym in 28*C. The run there was pleasant, the run back was not LOL. But we did it.

Running

Slightly better running week:

  • Monday – 2KM walk/jog
  • Tuesday – 2.5KM massive fail at a run
  • Friday – 4 KM running
  • Saturday – new parkrun in Amersfoort, 5KM

Monday was just too soon to try to run all the way to the gym and back. Call me lame but Monday mornings I just find really tough. Anyway, I walk/ jogged there and then basically walked home. Then on Tuesday. I knew I wasn’t going to manage the training in the evening because of the heat so I tried to go out in the morning for a run and to assess the situation in the park. Friday I must have been at my peak because I managed running there and back.

I was Run Director this week at my parkrun but we ended up canceling due to it just being too hot and humid to hold a responsible event. Plus our path was blocked again by another event going on in the park, so all in all canceling was the way to go. That gave me the opportunity to go to Amersfoort for the new parkrun there, called Nimmerdor. With a negative comes a positive! I also ran the entire route, though it was quite slow as I just wanted to make sure I didn’t overheat.

Walking

This week I not only reached but surpassed my 200 days of daily walking! But no big walks this week. It is just too damn hot.

  • Monday – 2KM
  • Tuesday – 2.5KM
  • Wednesday – 2KM
  • Thursday – 2.5KM
  • Friday – 3km
  • Saturday – 2KM
  • Sunday – ** still to be done

Total: 14 without KM’s for Sunday logged

I had too much going on again this week. A last minute meeting with Arnhem Together, nail appt on Tuesday, 2nd Coaching session (of a 4 part series) Wednesday, Thursday another meeting with an AT colleague and by Friday I was completely done with everything. The heat, work, parkrun discussions. All of it.

This coming week is another one of those, but hopefully more fun… It’s end of the month which is not so fun, but Thursday I have a wood-stamp workshop (I just wanted to do something creative and that’s what I found available), on Saturday a pottery workshop and then later we are going on a Bever Watching Tour in the Biesbosch.

I hope it cools down soon because to be perfectly honest this is making me aggravated!

In other news:

I picked up my Spanish lessons again this week (well I restarted) and I joined Duolingo again as a supplement. I also managed to do some furniture painting as well and ordered a few bits and bobs for my hobby room drawers. So at least a few nice things going on as well/

How was your week? What was your favorite workout or run this week? Are you on Duolingo?

LOL at remembering how you trained in the heat before. Sometimes you are your own best example and have to live up to yourself!

Your upcoming art classes sound great — maybe you can share more over coffee on Friday. 😉

it’s true right? what good are experiences if we can’t reflect on them in times of need haha!
If anything comes out of the workshop, I promise to share 🙂

Oh yes I’ve been hearing all about your heatwave! I agree, the heat makes everything so hard. At least in Florida we’re ready for it, with AC blasting everywhere. It’s hard when you’re not used to that kind of heat.
Nice job keeping up your walking streak, and nice job on the 5k run! And great job on the two gym workouts- the hardest thing for me is getting to the gym.

yeah as much as I love AC it’s not great for the environment and it’s not *totally* needed here. but my mobile unit was getting overtime last week and hardly made a dent in the heat!

      thanks!

Your walking streak is impressive! Keep up the great work 😉 I have to agree that humidity is tough to deal with. I seem to have a high tolerance, so I can handle the humidity. That doesn’t mean I have to like it, LOL.

yeah you’ve got an advantage of being used to the humidity. no one likes it, some can just handle it better.

Ugh on the heat and humidity. We’ve been spoiled with many beautiful days, but unfortunately the humidity has returned and the heat is expected to soar by Wednesday, reaching 100° by the weekend.

I did Spanish on Duolingo for almost a year and then stopped when we went on a trip and never restarted. That was a couple of years ago… 🙁

Enjoy your arts and crafts. That’s always a great way to destress!

I think I did 6 months of Italian back in 2020. And then stopped. No idea why.

I am on Duolingo! I think it’s fun, but does it really prepare me for travel to a foreign country? Maybe not. But it is fun! I re-learned French (took classes in high school) and recently I learned Italian. I did feel quite accomplished when I knew many more Italian words than my family. Now I just get sad messages from Duo to come back and study again! I stopped doing it after my trip. Maybe I should just do it for fun!
Good job on getting some runs in with that heat and humidity. Our heat is coming up next week!

I’m on duolingo! Maybe I’ll have to find and friend you? Good luck keeping up with your workouts even with the heatwave. It sounds rough!

Good consistency this week! I would think the AC in the gym would be a welcome place to train. We are expecting super hot temps this week as well.

That’s a great week despite the heat. I know it got a bit intense in continental Europe (and UK too) while we just had very nice summer weather. That’s a big positive that you were able to go to that other parkrun, and run all of it too!

I tried Duolingo once but felt it wasn’t great for my needs. How does it work these days, I heard they replaced all the humans with AI?? But I also heard they wanted some of them back recently.. I’d love to practise my Italian but the way to go is probably to just have a video chat with a friend.

It’s really hot here–this week will be in the 100s with humidity to match. Not a fan. But at least we have AC…

I used to do duolingo for Spanish; then at work they started a cohort of people who would learn Spanish on the app Busuu. It was really difficult–they kept throwing in all the different tenses at once. My old brains really struggled, even with the fair amount of Spanish that I speak!

Hi, lovely! So glad to see you!

It’s sooooo hot here. It’s in the hundreds today and I just don’t want to do anything. Gross.

I gave up Duolingo when they fired all their people and went to an all AI model. I’m not sure if they reversed that decision, because I was learning Italian and kind of rocking it.

I avoided the gym last week – it has large fans in place but the aircon they have promised isn’t in yet and it’s just too much. No running due to my ankle, BUT I walked to and from Ali’s for lunch today, 3+ miles in total, and it didn’t make a fuss, so maybe I’m getting there …
