WRD – Week 20/2023 Out of the Running (this week)

First, a heartfelt THANK YOU to all of you supporting and expressing condolences for Charlie. We are OK, just missing him and trying to get used to the idea of him being gone.

Second; this week: Why is it so hard to have a routine? I’ve been trying now for months and months and there always seems to be something. So this week I haven’t run, not even once, but I had to make that decision based on my energy and unfortunately also my pain levels.

I am not young anymore, friends. This week, the biggest change in plans was for Thursday; Ron was feeling some awful fan FOMO and not happy about the fact that we hadn’t bought tickets to the Depeche Mode show in Amsterdam (they actually played two nights, but he was focused on the Thursday). Eventually he secured tickets so choices had to be made about the bike ride (didn’t happen), going to the gym (did) and/or having a run (didn’t happen) before going to Amsterdam.

All I can say is, the level of pain in my knees and feet, standing at a concert for hours is insane. Does anyone else have this? Why is is SO bad?

Am I glad we went? Of course. Even though Dutch people are the tallest people in the world who seem to be attracted to standing RIGHT in front of me. I couldn’t see a thing LOL. Next shows are in the “golden circle”; up front and a different experience. I’ll be able to see but will probably still be in pain.

Anyway. Now you know. And he we go on the WRD:

WEEK 20/2023

Plan vs Actual

Monday – RPM, 1.4KM walk, gym
Tuesday – DAY OFF, 3.8KM walk + gym: 40 min strength + 30 min cardio
Wednesday – run at lunch, then gym 3 KM walk
Thursday – HOLIDAY in NL – possible bike ride  gym: 40 min strength, 2.6KM walk
Friday – run at lunch  1.43KM walk
Saturday – 5KM walk + possible gym
Sunday run, walk, bike? not sure yet. The walk will happen, forgot I was going to a tattoo convention today

I think, mostly I am exhausted from last week, dealing with the stress and grief of losing Charlie, work is busy and stressful because people are on holiday and then not getting enough sleep from Thursday onwards just doesn’t help.

Of course I also then had way too much going on in a few days time; the concert, then an English pub quiz that I helped organise for international people living in Arnhem (Friday night), Saturday morning early up for parkrun (was Run Director so no participating for me) and Sunday morning up early to meet my friend Heather in Eindhoven for a tattoo convention. Feast or famine on the social front, I tell ya.

COMING UP NEXT WEEK

Obviously I will continue my walk streak of min 1KM per day.

Monday – walk, gym
Tuesday – DAY OFF- RUN/walk
Wednesday – walk, gym
Thursday – walk, run after work
Friday – walk
Saturday – walk, gym (volunteering at parkrun)
Sunday – walk and if the weather is good, BIKE

Looking at my agenda for next week I see that I have several things going on again… but I’m going to try to manage my energy level appropriately.

Also, I REALLY want to get to the gym 3 x a week; I have made it now 2 weeks, 2 times, but I will make it happen next week.

That’s a wrap!

How was your week? do you overplay and then wonder why you do it, only to see that you’ve done it for the next week as well? Asking for a friend LOL!

If you have 3 minutes, a participant made a short video at parkrun last week and I’d love for you to watch. It gives a great impression of our event.

  1. Darlene Cardillo says:

Yes yes. I often have elaborate plans and then wonder why I’m exhausted.

So sorry about Charlie. My solution to my car loss seems to be get another. But you can never really replace them.

Hope your week can include less stress.

    1. Renée says:

hey thanks Darlene. I am already going to put the brakes on a few other events coming up. I can’t deal with it. We are thinking of getting another cat but the time and cat has to be right. I’m still missing my crazy kitty.

  2. Hope you feel like you are back on track this week. I am a creature of habit and routine and really do stick to my exercise routine except when traveling. Hope this week runs more smoothly for you!

    1. Renée says:

thanks Deborah. I’m really working on nailing the habit again.

  3. Jenny says:

I second Darlene’s opinion- the best thing to do, when you’re ready, is to get another cat. There are a lot of cats out there who need homes, and it will make you feel so much better. Not that another cat could replace Charlie- they’re all unique so a new furry friend would be different, but still lovable.
Yes, I have a “difficult foot” that would NOT like standing for hours! My knees are mysteriously fine though.

    1. Renée says:

yes for sure we will get another, I just want to know what is going to happen with Rudyy, who is our Ukrainian Lodger Kitty (stepson’s). We’ll know when we are ready.

  4. Well, I thought I was really balancing everything well finally — right before I got sick for 3 weeks (which I think was actually two different things), so don’t ask me!

However, no, I wouldn’t be in a lot of pain from standing that long. But my body is not your body. And yes, grief can take a very physical toll, too.

Here’s to a much better week this coming week! And I would never see a thing with the Dutch standing in front of me either . . .

    1. Renée says:

yeah we don’t have a lot of control in the end do we… you can balance all you want but sometimes things still happen.

I don’t know what I’m going to do about my foot for the next two shows. take a lot of ibuprophen and hope it doesn’t kill my stomach?

From now on I’m in seats for concerts. enough of the giants standing right in front of me!

  5. Jessie says:

The Dutch are tall aren’t they!
I’m sure the grief and stress are weighing on you. Hoping for a better upcoming week for you!

    1. Renée says:

      they really are!
it’s hard sometimes to just pick up and move on full force but I’m doing it!

  6. Michelle says:

Yes standing like that all evening would do a number on me too – but I bet the concert was fun :)
I am sure the stress of losing Charlie has taken a toll. I hope you are able to rest and reset this week.

    1. Renée says:

I’m glad I’m not the only one ! it was fun! I’m looking forward to (sitting) Harry Styles Sunday and then two more DM shows. For some reason I’m thinking there is another concert in my future as well but not til October maybe?

      Thanks so much Michelle!

  7. San says:

Oh, a Depeche Mode concert. What a good excuse. (j/k) It sounds like you had lot going on so it’s all about “adaptation”… sometimes life gets in the way of the best intentions, but as long as you keep doing *something*, I think it’s all good :)

    1. Renée says:

great excuse haha! you’re right adapt and be flexible but keep moving, it is all good!

  8. Wendy says:

Yeah, getting older kinda sucks. But…you were at a Depeche Mode concert! It sure beats sitting home in front of the TV, right? Just keep doing your thing…

    1. Renée says:

Definitely better than sitting at home in front of the TV!

  9. I can relate to being over-scheduled and wanting to do everything. My problem is that I seldom ever feel tired, LOL. I was majorly exhausted Saturday night, though, following the day-long relay. I definitely recognized that!

    1. Renée says:

yeah I don’t know how you do it, but I bet you were mega tired after the relay!

  10. Jenn says:

    I am still so sorry.
Concerts are hard for me. We did an outdoor festival on Saturday and four hours was my limit. So people-y lol.
I thrive on routine. But I also don’t want to set it.

    1. Renée says:

      thanks Jenn.
and yeah concerts are very people-y LOL! and this concert was packed.
I understand what you mean about routine.

  11. Marcia says:

I’m sure you are still so exhausted from the stress and trauma of losing Charlie. Hugs to you and Ron. How fun to see a DM concert. I would absolutely love to see them. Bummer about not being able to see but what can you do. My job has me standing, walking, etc for 6 hours straight most days. It took some acclimation but the body does adapt. Ha! Here’s to a better week ahead.

    1. Renée says:

Thanks Marcia. And yeah if you have standing tickets not much you can do except go somewhere where people are shorter ha!

  12. Kim G says:

I haven’t gone to a concert in a long time but I know I would definitely have some back pain after standing up so long! I didn’t know that Depeche Mode was on tour – I would actually love to see them live!

    1. Renée says:

Yeah I had some light back pain as well! it’s tough! They toured the US already and are now on the European leg but I heard they might add some more dates after this? Maybe you can still catch them. They are so good and so much good energy.

  13. Debbie says:

How fun that you were able to go to a Depeche Mode concert! Bummer about your lack of view and knee pain. For me, it’s my back that doesn’t like standing in one place.

    1. Renée says:

yeah it was nice to “hear” the concert anyway haha! too bad our bodies can’t handle stuff like this very well.

  14. So fun you went to see Depeche Mode! I did hear they were touring. The tall people in front of me would be my issue too (well, because I’m short!). I am looking forward to getting into my summer fitness routine – which means I don’t have to get up quite so early. The early morning sun is always the best too. yay!

    1. Renée says:

yeah I’m really short here, but a pretty average or even short-tall in the US? they are just giants here. Nice that you can start up your summer routine now!
