WRD – Week 30/2023 Stormy Weather

So much rain here, I’m really over it already. Unfortunately there is a storm in my head as well. I went off the medication I was on for several years, as a suggestion from my GP. I’m pretty sure it should have gone a bit slower because my head is an absolute mess right now. I’m doing my best to remind myself that this too shall pass. But it sucks because I feel physically and mentally unwell at the moment.

Anyway. I don’t want to dwell too much on it. Let’s get into how the week went fitness-wise:

WEEK 31

Tuesday – 3KM walk (office day) to and from train station
Wednesday – 3KM walk, W6R1 run, 6KM, GLI 1 hour, gym 55 min
Thursday – 2.22KM walk, gym
Friday – 2.75KM walk, W6R2 run , gym 55 min
Saturday – 2.5KM walk, parkrun in Alkmaar 5KM, 17/17 Dutch parkruns done!

RUNNING

Another fairly neutral feeling about running this week. Still have to do my long run.

Wednesday – Already in the morning whilst walking I honestly didn’t think I would manage running at lunch, it was so humid. But Ron was ready to go at lunch and that’s how we roll. It was tough (again, no run is “easy” to me but hey one foot in front of the other!). We ran in the park, which means hills, which means it will take me 40 minutes for the 5KM unless I actually lose weight and/or somehow become faster.

Enjoying the deer and the break in the rain after the run

Friday – Another day where I though there was absolutely no way I could do intervals due to the stifling humidity, but proved myself wrong once again. This was a 10 min warmup, then 6 intervals of 2min/1min. I don’t know how to gauge the tempo, so the first interval was really fast (for me) as I really thought I was going to puke afterwards haha! 5:55 min per km. Keep in mind my “easy” tempo is like 7:30 on a good day. Ron thinks I have it in me, I just need to dig deep. I think I don’t like feeling like I’m going to puke. Let’s see how that goes next interval session. In the end it was 5:55/6:20/6:29/6:20/5:59/6:27. So yeah, kind of all over the place.

Sunday – Still need to do my run. It will be long. I hope it will not be too humid

Total running this week, not including today: 10.5KM

GYM

Not a good week for the gym. Though I did go for my appointment on Monday evening. And strangely enough – not my favourite part of the PT appointments – I weighed less (like 1.2KG I think it was) but my fat percentage went up (WTF) and muscle went down (another WTF). I will never understand this. But don’t worry I take all of this with a grain of salt.

My trainer has now upped the weights and lowered reps. But honestly I had such a week, plus the extra task of taking care of the cat that I just couldn’t / didn’t want to figure out how to get to the gym as well.

Next week back on track.

CYCLING

Most of the cycling this week was functional – my friends live just less than 2KM from us and they are currently enjoying the sun on Kos, but someone needs to take care of their little princess, Zus, while they are away.

But on Tuesday (no office day due to IT / connection issues) I rode out to where my nice colleague J was staying for a few days break at a Bungalow park near me (at the National Park Hoge Veluwe). I had a shitty day at work (or rather I was dealing the shitty person again) and this ride out was really needed. First I stopped off to take care of the cat and then it was lots of nature and fresh air to the Bungalow park. We had a drink for her birthday and a great chat. Definitely helped the mood some.

This sunset after cycling home was an absolute gift.

Total cycling this week: 31KM and I still need to go visit Zus today.

WALKING

Still need to walk today, Day 211 of the walk streak. I am still walking in the morning before work, but there were a few mornings where I really didn’t feel like it. Most days it was raining, not bucketing down at least, but still not the most pleasant.

Also ended up walking at parkrun as Tailwalker as we did have walkers. That particular job means that you have to adapt to what the other participants are doing, so that’s what I did.

Total walking this week, not including today: 22.6KM so definitely more than last week.

Coming up Next Week

WEEK 31

Still walking …

Monday – walk, gym (appt w/different PT)
Tuesday – walk (office day)
Wednesday – walk, W6R1 run
Thursday – walk, gym
Friday – walk, W6R2 run
Saturday – walk, parkrun in Alkmaar (maybe will skip Friday)
Sunday – walk, long run W6R3

I’ve opted to do a program suggested by my GP even though I felt that maybe it wasn’t the right thing for me. After discussing it further, I’ve decided to do it. I will have a trainer, dietician and a program tailored to me and my needs to get my BMI down (though you know how I feel about the BMI scale). They will even go so far as to incorporate things into my program to alleviate the pain I have in my feet with different exercises and stretches specifically for the immobility I have (can also eventually help the pain I have in my right knee). I will go for the first set of physical tests and measurements next week and then will have a slight overlap with the fitness program there and at my own gym. Will definitely update next week.

Hopefully it’s a more positive update on the whole anyway.

That’s a wrap!

How was your week? Rain, humidity, weather bringing you down?

  1. I know that you are frustrated right now. I hope this new program works well for you. Upping your weights sounds like a good plan. It is hard not to get discouraged when you don’t see the results you expect. Stick with with it and keep moving forward

  2. Actually that program sounds fantastic! I’d love to have something like that tailored to me. j

I’m sorry you’re struggling with the withdrawal from your meds. That can’t be fun at all, but hopefully things will get better.

We had plenty of humidity this week. It was definitely not fun (and draining for my body battery, LOL!).

  3. Ugh, sounds like a tough week. Although there were some bright spots- that bike ride and sunset sound (and look) amazing. I hope this new program helps you. Alleviating pain in your feet can only be a good thing! And, I hope your weather improves- I happen to know that running in the heat and humidity is no fun.

  4. Sounds like you’re on a good path; I hope you get some encouraging results! Not much for rain in my area, though there was a crazy storm that came though Friday night in Iowa City (where I was, prepping for the Saturday morning ride of RAGBRAI).

  5. Glad to hear that you have the option of that fitness program! But do you have to wean off your meds? Idk–if they were helping, why stop? I hope you feel better. <3

  6. Can’t wait to hear how this new program goes and that things start going better for you.
Our weather was the worst – hot humid and rainy!! Pretty hard to get excited to go run… and I skipped the gym everyday but Sunday due to work stuff…

This week has to be better…

  7. Ugh, I am sorry you feel so off right now… and the weather in Europe surely is not helping (I hear from my family and friends about all the rain). I am glad you try to do what you can… and I am keeping my fingers crossed that this program that you’re about to start will work for you!

  8. I’m so sorry you’re not feeling well at the moment and hope your body will soon adjust to the medication changes your doctor made.

I hope the new program with a trainer and dietician working together to help you is successful. I was one of the trainers at a wellness center where we had a similar model. It was run by a physician who also tracked blood pressure, cholesterol, etc. We had great results with many of our patients.

  9. The program sounds pretty great! I’m glad you’ve decided to give it a go.

Beautiful pictures from the park, everything looks very green!
